  • 715.16 OSTEOARTHROSIS LOCALIZED PRIMARY INVOLVING LOWER LEG

Osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as OA, or as degenerative joint disease (DJD), involves the breakdown of articular cartilage and subchondral bone. The development of OA in the knee joint can be the result of hereditary factors, excessive joint wear and tear or after a traumatic knee injury, such as an ACL tear. OA typically occurs in the medial compartment of knee, but it can manifest in the lateral compartment too. Many patients will suffer OA in both knees, and it is commonly seen in the overweight population.
